Illustrations by Adrian Higgins with words by Mike Bedford.

Making Films of the Underground: Video Recording in the Dark (3-6) (PDF 514KB)
Footleg looks at techniques for filming using a variety of the equipment you can buy today, and how he has found it best to use and care for it underground.

The Ultimate in 3D Photography: a Basic Introduction to Holography (7-9) (PDF 393KB)
Mike Bedford investigates the principle of holography. He explains how it builds on stereophotography, which has commonly been used by cave photographers to capture the underground environment in three dimensions, but adds much more.

Auriga – Looking Back at 15 Years of Development (10-12) (PDF 199KB)
Auriga was the first caving software specifically designed for underground use. Its adoption by many expeditions has improved the quality of their survey data by favouring in-cave corrections of survey errors, while also helping orient explorations. Luc Le Blanc, software designer, reflects on his 15 years of developing the Auriga freeware.

We Hear... (13) (PDF 97KB)
News and events – Mike Bedford brings us the latest to impact the world of cave radio and electronics. Introducing the R2B App, 'Holographic' Smartphone, Casio Exilim FR110H Low Light Camera.

Introduction to Digital Holography (14-15) (PDF 111KB)
Javid Khan, Managing Director of Holoxica, explains the principle of digital holography, by which a hologram can be created from a three-dimensional computer model.

Wet & Dry (16) (PDF 246KB)

Outlining the Architecture of the Nicola 3Z Cave Radio (17-19) (PDF 621KB)
Graham Naylor and Pete Allwright provide an overview of the architecture of the Nicola 3Z rescue radio. Using a Xilinx Zynq-7010 system-on-chip, it implements a software-defined radio design in the FPGA and peripheral functions using the ARM A9+ processor core.

Letters and Notes (20) (PDF 76KB)
Loop Orientation, Scanning & Searching, Diary Dates.

Web Watch (20)  For download see previous item
Peter Ludwig delves into the Internet again and pulls out some choice plums for our delectation…

Speleo-holography: Making Holograms in the Cave Environment (21-24) (PDF 1.7MB)
Classically, holograms are made of objects brought to a lab that has a stable, vibration-damped table with a laser and cumbersome equipment. Cave holography brings the essential elements of that lab, assembled as a portable unit, to the speleothems in the naturally-stable vibration-free cave environment. John Klayer presents techniques for making holograms in this setting.
