BCRA > Publications > Online Content Quick link: BCRA now publishes an online version of Cave & Karst Science. All BCRA members have free access to this, and we offer a tiered membership with a lower membership fee for members who do not wish to receive the print edition of Cave & Karst Science. Online access is also available on a subscription basis to non-members of the Association, with an annual and a monthly fee. We will continue to offer C&KS on paper for as long as it is economically possible to do so. Online access allows members, on presentation of a user-id and access code, to download both individual articles and the complete journal as PDF files. An index to articles, complete with abstracts, is publicly viewable. Although, initially, only new issues will be placed online, we hope to be able to digitise some back issues. All customers who are issued with a user-id/access code will be able to access any of BCRA's online content for the period of their subscription. (In other words, subscriptions are not limited to newly-published issues of C&KS). Having said that, the amount of online content we can prepare from back-issues of our periodicals does depend on how much volunteer effort is available. For information about access by member clubs, please read the FAQ below. You can now sign-up to receive BCRA information by email. This includes a notification by email whenever any new online content is made available; in particular, each time a new issue of C&KS is published. You can sign-up here, or you can send a blank email message to notices-subscribe[at]list.bcra... [etc]. Further Information |

| How to obtain your access codes | ||
| To access the online content... You will need a User-ID and Access Code, which you can obtain as follows...
|
||
| What do the codes look like? On the mailing wrappers of BCRA periodicals and newsletters, there should be a string of characters that looks like this: (Note: the codes were not printed correctly on the mailing wrappers for publication issued in June 2009) DIM-BK == 1204A == SmithJ0309 == 12BC34 On your membership card (DIMs only), there should be a string of characters that looks like this... Online ID: SmithJ0309 == 12BC34 In both cases, the last-but-one group, e.g. SmithJ0309, is your User-ID and the final group, e.g. 12BC34 is your access code. Note that the codes are not case-sensitive - the capitalisation of your User-ID is only for convenience. |

| Cave & Karst Science Online: FAQ | ||
| Can I specify my own password?
No. We may introduce this feature later but, to begin with, you must use the access code you are issued with. |
||
| I do not have high-speed
Internet Access. Will you send me a CD-ROM? No. Or rather: we cannot realistically consider this unless a volunteer offers to take on the task. The PDFs will be broken down into individual articles so the down-loads should be a reasonable size for most people. You could also consider accessing the data at your local library or education centre. Failing that, paper is still a wonderful medium. |
||
| How will you
notify me that a new issue has been published on-line? You can now sign-up to receive BCRA information by email. You can do this on-line, here, or you can send a blank email message to notices-subscribe[at]list.bcra... [etc] |

| Is Online Access Going to
Cause the Demise of the Paper Edition? Absolutely not. There are a number of ill-informed rumours that keep circulating on this subject, despite BCRA's pledge that it will continue to produce a paper edition! Provision of an online edition - and the parallel production of the paper version in colour - is seen as a way to ensure its survival, not its demise. |
||
| For volume 34 of C&KS we have been using a 'direct digital printing' process (essentially a high-resolution colour laser printer). Not only does this provide a fixed cost per copy, right down to single copies, but it allows us to print in colour. This is seen as important in maintaining our academic readership. This printing process is already used for printing BCRA's CREG journal and the BCA Handbook and it was also used to print BCRA Cave Studies Series #17. Eventually, it is planned to use this process to provide a print-on-demand service for BCRA publications so that we do not need to hold a stock of back-issues. Of course, all plans depend on what our hard-pressed volunteers are able and willing to do. In the event of volunteers not being available to perform certain tasks then, no, BCRA cannot guarantee to continue to provide any service. | ||
| Why Isn't Online Access Free?
C&KS costs money to produce, not least because the editorial assistant is paid for her time. Additionally, we provide exchange copies free of charge to other organisations (see Journal Exchange Programme. BCRA costs money to run, regardless of how C&KS is published. The fee you pay has to contribute to these costs. |
||
| Do All
Members of a Member Club Get Free Access? Yes. The club's subscription entitles all its members to online access, just as they would be allowed access to the paper copy in the club's library. However, we do request that clubs refrain from publishing the access credentials (e.g. in a club newsletter, forum or blog). We suggest that an appropriate club officer (e.g. the librarian or secretary) asks the club members to request the information if/when they require it. |
