Overcoming Flight Restrictions: Using non-Lithium Batteries with LED-based Caving Lamps (3-7) (PDF 663KB)     

Carrying lithium-based cells on aircraft is severely restricted. Modern caving lamps use lithium-ion battery packs so this is an issue for cavers travelling to expeditions. Mike Bedford provides advice on using non-lithium alternatives. Solutions are offered for the Scurion 'Caving' and 'Basic' but the principles are more general.

The British Cave-Monitoring Centre (8) (PDF 152KB)     

The British Cave Research Association is teaming up with Buxton Civic Association to provide a facility to be known as the British Cave Monitoring Centre at Poole's Cavern show cave, in Derbyshire, UK. Equipment will be provided to allow students to undertake projects to provide long-term monitoring of cave climate and to facilitate cave-related studies and scientific research. David Gibson describes how this is also an opportunity for BCRA's Cave Radio and Electronics Group to provide tailor-made equipment for sensing, logging, and the transmission of data to a website. The British Cave-Monitoring Centre uses Tinytag data loggers.

 

caveGEOmap: User-friendly Cave Mapping Software (9-12) (PDF 747KB)     

Angel A. Acosta-Colón and Jose F. Candelaria-Soberal describe the development of a new, free, cave mapping package. Resulting output is compared with results from GeoSLAM ZEB1 lidar surveys of two caves in Puerto Rico's northern coastal karst belt.
