by John GUNN and Trevor FORD

GUNN, John and Trevor FORD (1990). Caves and Karst of the Peak District [Cave Studies Series 3]. Buxton: British Cave Research Association. Out of print. ISBN-0-900265-12-4. 32pp, A5, with maps and photos.

This volume in the Cave Studies Series is currently out of print, but is expected to be back in print by the end of 2016

An excursion guidebook to the karst landforms and some accessible caves within the Peak District.

The Peak District lies at the southern end of the Pennines, mostly within Derbyshire. To the south, the White Peak is limestone country, with its dales and caves. The particular features of the area have precluded both the development of deep potholes which are common in the Yorkshire Dales, and the extensive river caves common in South Wales. Veins of galena (lead ore), fluorspar, baryte and calcite are widespread - there are many old mines, and some caves were first entered by lead miners.
Following an introduction to the geology and geomorphology of the area the reader is taken on seven brief 'excursions' to the areas of Buxton, Castleton (2), Dove Dale, Upper Lathkilldale, Matlock and Eyam
