Swildons 2 & 3
by David IRWIN

IRWIN, David (2004). Swildons 2 & 3 [Cave Studies Series 14]. Buxton: British Cave Research Association. £2.50 plus postage. ISBN-0-900265-29-9. 48pp, A5, with diagrams and photos.

A history of the exploration beyond sump 1 in Swildon's Hole, Priddy, Somerset

This is a venture into new territory so far as the Cave Studies Series is concerned - speleo-history, in this case the exciting story of how one particular cave was explored in the days before the second world war. The early days, prior to 1921, are covered in outline, but in the main it is the story of how the exploration of flooded cave passage was attempted, of how several approaches were tried, and of how, through the application of simple logic leading to technical innovation, success was eventually achieved
