News and Proceedings

Newsletters are no longer published, but are still archived online. Our Annual Review is probably the best way to find out what BCRA has been doing recently. Proceedings are informal reports of BCRA Meetings, e.g. handouts or conference handbooks. They are only available online and are not a complete record of BCRA activities.

Newsletters (2003–present)

Proceedings (2009–present)

Former Periodicals

We have several former periodicals that are available online. Paper copies of most are currently also available on enquiry, although we intend to reduce our paper stock in the next year or two. This material includes our former news magazines, Caves and Caving and Speleology as well as BCRA's earlier science journals, Transactions and Cave Science.

Speleology Archive (2003–2016)

Cave Science Archive (1974–1993)

Caves & Caving Archive (1979–2002)

Exploring the Limestones of South Devon. A guide to walks that discover the limestones and caves of South Devon by John Wilmot, Chris Proctor and David Jean.

This book, published by William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust, was launched at their joint field meeting with BCRA in Spring 2014. It is written in a similar style to BCRA's Cave Studies booklets; A5 in format, with 126 pages in full colour. It is available from WPCST.

Cave Archaeology and Karst Geomorphology of Northwest England: Field Guide by H. J. O'Regan, T. Faulkner, I. R. Smith.

This Field Guide was produced to accompany the joint QRA / BCRA Field Meeting to Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales in June 2012. It covers recent research into cave archaeology and aspects of karst geomorphology in this area. This was also the first meeting of the BCRA Cave Archaeology Special Interest Group.

Softbound. 186 pp. A5. ISBN 978-1-903564-37-0. [2012, Quaternary Research Association]

Gouffre Berger - L'Esprit d'Equipe by Mark Wright and Robbie Shone

This book provides past visitors with an excellent showcase of its most significant features and will hopefully inspire future visits to this magnificent cave system. It provides a history of the cave's exploration together with valuable information for those planning a visit.

All profits from the sale of the book will support the work of the Ghar Parau Foundation (GPF) and the Association Nicola. The GPF is a sub-charity of BCRA, funding UK caving expeditions. The Association Nicola is a French charity which was involved in developing a through-rock communication system now in use by many caving groups.

Hardbound. 256pp full colour, >100 photos. 305mm x 255mm. ISBN 978-1-910240-12-0. [2014, Vertebrate Publishing]

Cave Pearls of Meghalaya Volume 1, Pala Range and Kopili Valley. Edited by Thomas Arbenz

This book covers the exploration of caves in the Pala Range and Kopili Valley. There are chapters on Meghalaya, on the 2010-2012 expeditions in that area, and also on the geology, subterranean ecology, spiders and bats. The second half of the book is devoted to cave descriptions each with survey and photographs plus a list of minor caves and other sites of speleological interest.

The inside back cover contains a CD with surveys of the six longest systems, a satellite view of the area with cave surveys superimposed, and an article describing the identification of two new species of bat.

June 2015: Volume 2 can now be pre-ordered.

General Information

BCRA Publications

Cave and Karst Science (ISSN 1356-191X) is BCRA's peer-reviewed science journal, published three times a year. Paper subscriptions are available to members and non-members. It is available online, free of charge, as part of BCRA's commitment to open access to scientific research. Our predecessor publications, BCRA Transactions and Cave Science are also online. Most issues of C&KS and its predecessors are also available on paper - see the catalogue listing.

The BCRA Review (ISSN 2516-1423) is a new publication, designed as a replacement for Speleology. The first issue was published in the summer of 2016 and it will appear annually, shortly in advance of our AGM, each year. The content includes reports of BCRA field meetings and activities, as well as our Report and Annual Accounts.

The Cave Radio and Electronics Group Journal (ISSN 1361-4800). CREG is one of BCRA's Special Interest Groups. CREG is probably the leading organisation of its kind in the world. It produces a quarterly journal, which is available on paper or as an online subscription. The online content is free to BCRA members. Most back issues are available on paper.

The Cave Studies Series is a set of introductory booklets on a range of cave-related topics. It provides an introductory text aimed at the sport caver who has become interested in some other aspect of speleology. We are always willing to consider possible new titles and to discuss projects with potential authors. There are plans to make some of the titles available online in the near future.

Caves and Karst of the Yorkshire Dales (ISBN 978-0-900265-46-4) is a major new book from BCRA, which presents a comprehensive overview of all aspects of the caves and karst of the Yorkshire Dales. It is the long-awaited successor to the 1974 publication Limestones and Caves of Northwest England but is a much more comprehensive treatment because of the many cave discoveries in the last 40 years and the new information that is available on the underground and surface features.

Speleology (ISSN 1478-999X) was originally the Bulletin of BCRA but, after BCA's creation, it was adopted as BCA's in-house magazine. Although still published by BCRA, it was largely funded by BCA, with the strap-line Bulletin of British Caving. It ceased publication with issue 19. Back issues are available online. Most issues of Speleology and its predecessor publication, Caves and Caving, are also available on paper - see the catalogue listing.

A two-volume Cave Science Index, which covers Cave & Karst Science and its predecessor titles has been published on paper, although this is rather out-of-date now. A more up-to-date online version can be searched. The online version has been extended to include the publications of BCRA's predecessors and those of University of Bristol Spelaeological Society and William Pengelly Cave Studies Trust. It also covers BCRA's Cave Surveying Group and Cave Radio & Electronics Group.

BCRA still has stock of most issues of BCRA's 'transactions' and 'bulletin' as well as those of its predecessor organisations. Please enquire.

Some non-BCRA material is stored in our Online Archive. Plus, of course, the British Caving Library contains a large amount of material.

Other Items, see Publications List

Speleological Abstracts / Bulletin Bibliographique Spéléologique (BBS) is a world-wide bibliography of caving publications, produced annually by the UIS (Union Internationale de Spéléologie). Its correspondents around the world collect caving articles and scientific papers which are catalogued into an A4 volume. From 1993 SA/BBS incorporated the earlier BCRA publication Current Titles in Speleology (CTS). The last print edition was volume 52, for the year 2013. More recent versions are available online at ssslib.ch/bbs. BCRA has reference copies of many of the print editions but our surplus stock is in the process of being disposed of [in 2019]. BCRA used to co-ordinate the abstracting of British publications for inclusion but, in recent years, we have lacked a volunteer to do this. For the latest information, please see any postings there might be to the BCRA News Forum.

We have a number of other titles in stock. Please contact us for an up-to-date list. You can also inspect a list of past BCRA titles, listed by ISBN / ISSN.
