17-19 April 2009, South Wales

Presentations of short topics on cave surveying, electronics, computing, lighting, photography, cave radio, radio-location and other aspects of caving "technology". Abstracts are required by mid-March 2009.

This one-day symposium (on 18 April) is being hosted by members of BCRA's special interest groups: the Cave Surveying Group (CSG), and the Cave Radio & Electronics Group (CREG). Technical facilities will be provided by the Hidden Earth technical team.

The event will co-incide with a weekend CSG field meeting. The symposium lecture secretary is Rob Gill r.gill[at]bcra.... Enquiries about the symposium venue, the CSG field meeting and South Wales Caving Club accommodation for the weekend should be sent to Allan Richardson.

Event Details
  Giving a Talk
Contributions are invited on any aspect of caving technology in the form of short lectures, poster papers, or more informal practical sessions. Cave survey posters and cave photographs are particularly welcome for display. Those wishing to contribute should contact the lecture secretary, Rob Gill. Digital projection facilities will be available, but please bring your own computer. (If OHP or 35mm projection is required, please let us know in advance). Whatever type of contribution you are offering, a publishable abstract of around 100-300 words is requested, so that we can publish a programme in advance.

DETAIL:

In outline, the symposium will consist of a number of lectures, poster papers and practical demonstrations. It is hoped that abstracts of talks will be available in advance, and that papers based on the lectures will be available for publication by BCRA or one of its SIGs. In other words, this event has a slightly more formal basis than a mere 'field meeting' and is aiming to be similar to BCRA's Science Symposium in concept. Initially, we're envisaging the following types of presentation...

  • Theoretical Lectures: supported by PowerPoint, Impress or your favourite means of getting the point across. You will have 25-40 minutes to do this, with an opportunity for questions in 'extra time'
  • Practical: As above, 25-40 minutes, but less emphasis on theory and more on field reports
  • Demonstrations: e.g. of equipment or techniques. Again, 25-40 minutes in length but, depending on what is offered, we may run several of these in parallel, in small groups.
  • Poster Papers: 10 minutes to describe the contents of your poster or cave survey.

The idea is to provide a forum for discussion of cave technology topics, with a particular emphasis on cave surveying, computing and electronics. However, the event could be extended to include discussions on other Special Interest Group topics, and so members of BCRA's EUG and the UK Cave Photography Group are welcome to contribute, or even to organise their own weekend field meetings to coincide with this classroom session.

  Location
Accommodation will be available at South Wales Caving Club headquarters in Penwyllt, in the upper Swansea valley. The Cave Surveying Field Meeting will be based here. The Saturday Symposium will be at the County Primary School in Pen-y-Cae; doors open at 09.00, start at 09.30. (Penycae CP School, Brecon Road, Penycae, SWANSEA, SA9 1FA).
  Programme
The programme will not be announced until a few weeks before the event.
Information about the previous event is here notice: 3 April 2008| notice: 11 April 2008

Dont forget that, even if you arent planning to give a formal talk, there will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and chat. Bring some equipment with you if you like. Bring your laptop and your favourite bit of software to show off during the coffee breaks. Bring a poster or cave survey. Bring your photos to put on the display boards. Bring your club journals to sell. If you can tell me in advance that youre doing any of this, it helps the planning!
Publications might* be on sale: These might* include the BCRA Cave Studies booklets, Speleology, the CREG journal, Compass Points (t.b.c.) and back issues of Underground Photographer and the Cave Photography Group newsletter. (* if a volunteer offers to organise this)
Field Activities: This symposium coincides with the Cave Surveying Group's field meeting and, on Sunday, members of the Cave Radio Group may be planning some field work too.
Accommodation: If you attending the Cave Surveying Group's field meeting, please contact them about accommodation.
