The editorial notes that this will be the last edition of Caves &
Caving, since the publication is being replaced by the new publication
Speleology, under the Editoship of David Gibson. BCRA has been very
proactive in suggesting changes in the services to be continued by BCRA, and
those to be taken on by the new national body, to be named the British Caving
Association. One change is that BCRA is discontinuing the production of a
general caving magazine, which has proved increasingly beyond the capabilities
of the volunteer effort available, and also far too expensive. Instead a
low-level scientific publication Speleology will be produced. It has
been suggested that if Cave and Karst Science by analogy were
"Science", then Speleology would be like "New Scientist".
BCRA has suggested that its non-scientific activities such as PL
insurance, a general caving magazine, organization and underwriting of the
national conference and non-scientific regional caving meetings,
international/foreign advice, and conservation advice can be transferred to the
British Caving Association, with the BCRA-set pre-condition that the BCA has
individual membership. BCRA will of course continue to promote cave and karst
science as a registered charity.
BCRA will continue to supply:
- 1. a peer-reviewed scientific journal Cave and Karst
Science
- 2. a popular science periodical Speleology
- 3. a Members' Newsletter
- 4. other occasional publications of a scientific nature (Cave
Studies Series, and others)
- 5. BCRA Research Fund to make grants to support approved cave science
projects
- 6. managing of UKCCEF in conjunction with the BCA
- 7. Ghar Parau Foundation associate charity to distribute and
part-fund grants for overseas caving expeditions
- 8. organization of an annual BCRA Cave Science Symposium
- 9. organization of regional meetings of a scientific nature, e.g.
geology, geomorphology, cave biology, hydrology, water tracing, archaeology,
photography, cave location, cave biology, archaeology, etc.
- 10. a National Caving Library
- 11. support for the Special Interest Groups, who themselves will be
organizing regional meetings of a particular scientific interest, e.g. cave
radio & electronics, telemetry, automatic water sampling, cave location,
cave survey, etc.
- 12. maintenance of a web site for cave science and research
matters.
It is hoped that the BCA "one stop shop" can be implemented from 1st
January 2004.
